HATHA YOGA

            Hatha Yoga is the 6000-year-old science and art of unifying the body, mind and spirit.  It uses postures or “asanas”, breathing techniques, relaxation, and meditation to stretch and tone the muscles and joints, limber the spine, soothe the nervous system, release tension and calm the mind.

            Each yoga class will include gentle and safe stretching exercises for all ages, breathing exercises, guided relaxation, chanting of OM and a short period of meditation.  Since many of these postures are done on the floor, a large towel or soft mat will be necessary.  A small pillow and a small, light cover or blanket would also be helpful.  Comfortable loose clothing should be worn, such as t-shirts, pants or shirts with elastic waists or sweat/work-out clothing.

            Yoga is non-competitive.  You will be encouraged to proceed at your own pace and in tune with your body’s own needs.  The rewards of practicing yoga come in the doing of the postures and breathing, not in achieving a required result.  “Listening to your own body” will be stressed and you will be in control of monitoring the extent to which you participate.

            A participant should be in reasonably good physical condition.  If you have special or acute health concerns, please consult you doctor.  You will be asked to sign a form which limits Unity Church’s and the instructor’s liability.  Please talk with the instructor about any health concerns.

            Each activity will be related to use in everyday activities with emphasis on managing stress and the unity of body, mind and spirit which is the definition of yoga.

            The class will meet on Tuesday nights from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. at Unity Church on the Space Coast in Titusville.
